Rayon, a type of cellulose fibers made from beech and bamboo trees is most commonly used in clothing. Primarily rayon is naturally occurring but due to the intense chemical process it undergoes, it becomes semi-synthetic. Rayon has been known for its remarkable ability to shape-shift; imitating other fibers quite well such as silk, cotton, and wool which means that this material can take on different qualities. Due to this reason, they're always considered somewhat mysterious. How Is It Made? Rayon and other man-made fibers are made primarily from purified cellulose, extracted by dissolving the wood pulp of pine or beech trees in caustic soda. The first step is to convert it into an alkali cellulose solution through dissolution with caustic soda. Second, comes chemical treatment that leads to the formation of xanthates - In this step, alkali cellulose is treated with carbon disulfide, leading to the formation of cellulose xanthate. In the fourth and fifth steps of production, these fibres are treated with an acid bath that solidifies them into individual strands or threads - creating fibre for our new fabrics. Finally, at the end of five steps, we get manufactured fresh rayon ready to be turned into beautiful clothes for all occasions and seasons.
