Fashion Industry Trends & History

Apparels have always won the crown in fashion, even though the trends appear to be changing from a major fashion evolution. It would not be wrong to say that it is often decided by manufacturers and fashion periodicals and, most importantly, driven by social media and personal expression.

New Trendsetters

Social media has always had played a significant part in changing fashion trends. Especially with a rise in influencer fashion as young consumers are probably more likely to go for an item they’ve seen on an influencer on Instagram on their phones than to from a shop window. The increasing obsession with influencers, like the Kardashians, has shaped a trend in which consumers only want higher quantities of items at any cost—causing significant damage to the environment and exploitation of textile workers, as it gives consumers the idea that clothes have a social expiry date and can only be worn once briefly during a trend.

History

Looking back at the history of fashion, we realize how style has evolved from one form to another. Fashion evolution indicates the current time in history as one gets to know about the shift in politics, social norms, technology, and culture through fashion evolution itself. Since these are the factors that have an impact on fashion, the world of fashion will keep turning just like the wheels of time in the form of various apparel, colors, designs, and ideas. What stays the same is the piece of fabric which is used in the making of the dress.

The main natural fabrics are cotton, silk, denim, flannel, hemp, leather, linen, velvet, wool. Whereas synthetic textiles include nylon, jersey, polyester, acetate, acrylic, polar fleece, rayon, and spandex.

What is Jersey?

Jersey is a knit fabric that is very soft. It was first produced in medieval times in Jersey, the Channel Islands initially. It was just used for men’s clothing but was later revolutionized by a famous designer Coco Chanel and was introduced as clothing for women. It is now commonly used in clothing. Earlier, most jersey fabrics were made with wool, but a Supplier of jersey fabric can now supply cotton and synthetic jersey garments. It is very well known for its stretchiness and comfort. Not only making excellent athletic wear but nowadays it is also used in modern clothing, in the making of dresses, skirts, shirts and other pieces of clothing.

Originally being made from wool, the jersey was quite expensive, but sophisticated and improved manufacturing techniques have introduced the use of synthetic fibers and cotton. Since Jersey is not a woven fabric, it is classified into two main categories.

Standard jersey

Which is also known as single knit or plain knit. It is made using only one set of needles and appears smooth on one side while piled on the other.

Double-knit jersey

Which is also called interlock jersey. It is two pieces of single knit jersey knit together to create a smooth surface on both sides.
